Manchester United manager Erik ten Hagy has questioned the knowledge and understanding of impatient fans who are calling for his release, as Arsenal counterpart Mikel Arteta believes the Dutchman deserves more time at Old Trafford.
United’s season hit a new low with a 4-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Monday Monday Night FootballThat leaves them ahead of them in eighth place super week The clash with Arsenal, live on Sky Sports.
Ten Hague’s side can record their lowest ever Premier League result this season, although they are in this month’s FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley. Sky Sports experts Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher disagree on whether the Dutchman should stay on as head coach.
“I think the fans have patience – you saw that on Monday,” said Ten Hag, referring to the outpouring of support from United’s traveling fans after the 4-0 defeat at Palace.
“But when I see some of the comments, they don’t. And either they don’t know about football or they don’t know about running a football team. It’s possible, or they’re just ready.
“But I think a lot of people see the problems and they’re patient.”
Ten Hag is confident “common sense” will prevail as the club’s decision-makers consider his future, shrugging off talk that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS Group could let him go even if United win the FA Cup, as they did with compatriot Louis van Gaal regarding 2016 year.
“If I see the problems we’ve had, all the injuries and almost every match they’ve fought,” Ten Hag said. “There was team spirit.
“Not on Monday, that’s why I was so disappointed. On Monday I was really disappointed and also the players were disappointed in themselves. There was a collective failure.
“But every other game we’ve fought, we’ve had good team spirit, so no, there’s no doubt about that.”
Arteta: I’m excited about Ten Hague United
Arsenal manager Arteta believes Ten Hag is an excellent manager who deserves more time to get things right at Old Trafford.
“I can only talk about what I think about him as a coach. He is a great coach. I admire his teams, both Ajax and United,” Arteta said when asked about Ten Hag’s position.
“I know what he’s trying to do, I know how he does it, I know how hard it is to prepare against him, so I have a lot of respect for him.
“Hopefully, yes, he will get time because we are colleagues and we know how difficult it is in this league and the limit and yes, hopefully he will because I think he is a great coach.
“If you want to win the Premier League and the big titles, you have to go to these grounds, prove yourself and beat them. That’s the way we’re going and that’s certainly what we’re going to do on Sunday.”
Neville vs Carragher: What should Manchester United do at The Hague?
Gary Neville to Sky Sports:
“I don’t see a suitable replacement for Ten Hag. Bayern Munich is trying to find a replacement, while others are struggling.
“I think we have to stick with Ten Hague and give him another season – injury free – to see if United can get back to the standard of last season where they won the cup and finished in the top four.
“For the last 10 years, players and managers have struggled to come to terms at Old Trafford. These players and managers were excellent when United signed them, so there is something fundamentally wrong that is creating this difficulty. Maybe new ownership and staff will make it possible. These players and managers feel more stable.
“Look, hopefully in three, four weeks, in the FA Cup final against Manchester City, which is such a tough game, we know how good City are, but if they can just break the odds, who knows where it could lead.
“You know, in 1989-1990 Sir Alex Ferguson won the FA Cup, that gave belief to a group of players. Then they won the Cup Winners’ Cup, then they won the League Cup, then they went on. Finally to win the League title.
“It’s been a building block, step by step, and it could be very close, or it could be a few years, but they’re going to win again, Manchester United. It’s inevitable.”
Jamie Carragher in his Daily Telegraph column:
“Ten Haag came to United with a great reputation for his work at Ajax, especially when he took them to the semi-finals of the Champions League. Someone who will set a clear vision.
United had qualified for the Champions League in two of the three seasons before Ten Hag’s appointment and there was a belief that the talented players needed top coaching and a culture change on the training ground.
“Like Arteta, Ten Hag had no choice but to use the personnel available to be more pragmatic in his first season. In his first three transfer windows, United spent £380m and nothing changed as they bought more stiffs. sold.
“Of Ten Hague’s first Premier League squad (defeat to Brighton in August 2022), seven will probably still make the first-choice XI. Only two have left the club, while the other, Jadon Sancho, is set to play in the Champions League. The final is on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
United regularly outplayed their opponents, losing 6-3 to Manchester City and 7-0 to Liverpool, while also struggling against mid-table teams in the Premier League.
“Even when United have had good results under Ten Hag, I really struggle to remember any particularly good performances with a perceptibly active playing system. Two years on, they are not set up as a top team.
“None of Arteta’s most disappointing defeats compare to Monday night’s 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace. Worryingly for Ten Hag, the biggest difference is that he is not the appointment of an owner. Arsenal’s management have ruined their reputations to get Arteta to prosper. Logic suggests That Ratcliffe will be more likely to stand or fall based on his managerial choices.
