David Moyes has shown class since his departure was confirmed, but was he aiming for a subtle dig at David Sullivan and co following his West Ham farewell?
And now the end is near and David Moyes is facing the final curtain for West Ham.
Hammers majority owner David Sullivan and technical director Tim Steidten appeared to avoid any partying for Moyes this week.
Both the club and Moyes have insisted for the past five months that no decision will be made on his future until the end of the season.
That all changed this week, however, when West Ham officially announced the Scot’s impending departure.
Many might have expected the Scotsman not to hit the decision.
While results and performances suggest otherwise for much of 2024, it would be easy for Moyes to suggest West Ham were making a mistake or feeling down.
Especially considering the various negotiations with other managers that have taken place of late.
Sullivan and Steidten were criticized by some fans, journalists and pundits for the way they handled it. Although the criticism of Steidten is somewhat strange, because he is simply doing his job.
Moyes shows class after confirming his departure
The way to solve the situation clearly did not work out for Moises.
Because the Scot decided to ban Steidten from the first team.
The worst kept secret in football is that Julen Lopetegui will replace Moyes at West Ham.
Although an official announcement has been held off until the end of the season out of respect for Moyes.
It would have been very easy for Moyes to be bitter about his Hammers exit.
However, this week he was nothing short of a class act.
First, he admitted that parting ways is the right thing for all concerned and that no one at West Ham bears any ill will towards the Terraces.
He was an unlikely ally for fans who were constantly told to “be careful what you wish for.”
He then waved goodbye to his successor Lopetegui after a 3-1 win over Luton at the London Stadium.
But it seems he couldn’t resist one little blow before going to his superiors.
Moyes is aiming for a subtle dig after saying goodbye to Sullivan and them
Moyes took a subtle dig at Sullivan and his teammates after West Ham’s farewell.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the reporter pressed Moyes repeatedly about his emotions and memories from his time at West Ham.
The Scot didn’t seem to want to open up too much or spill too much emotion.
He spoke about how far he has brought the club and had a few words to welcome the fans.
He then made it clear who was most important to him during his time at the club – his players.
The board was not mentioned at all. Which is understandable given the situation. But the way he delivered a line about the players at the end of the interview was telling.
“They are the ones who really matter”
“It’s a good time for me, it’s a great time for me,” Moyes said.
“I will leave with only good things to say and think about the football club.
“Yes, good feelings, yes, of course. Look, there are very few successful managers who don’t have bad timing and lose a few games.
“Sometimes it doesn’t go the way you want it to, very few (cool guys) don’t go through with it.” But here it was good, it really was.
“A big thank you to all the players who worked with me, because they are the ones who really matter.”
