Although there are far more likely winners, I can’t afford it Gerard Mentor Pass me by at a tempting price.

He tends to return for a second/third run after a break and his reappearance at Taunton last month after a five-month break was enough to give him plenty to do. This was after wind surgery, too, and the fact that his usual glasses – which are back today – have been swapped for a less severe headband, suggests it was just a jaunt to see if he was all right.

He’s now back to the same mark as he was after the Cawthorn Cracker at Exeter last October, and the conditions just can’t be fast enough for him, so hopefully Thunder will miss Ludlow later and he’ll stay on the faster side at Ludlow. .

Some bookies offer four places on the race, but we like the bigger price of three places for betting purposes.

4:03 Ludlow

fabulous music Swett turned well to score on C&D last time out and I’m trying to find a reason why he won’t go well again and go close as I was impressed with his attitude on the day, digging deep to get up late after the last.

Sean Bowen does exactly this type of ride, because the more you ask of him, the more he finds, and a 4lb gain seems more than fair for that success.

There are a couple of points of interest here for me.

Kapamazov Didn’t reach the heights I thought he could after a spectacular turn-of-the-year effort at Huntingdon, but it’s still early days and this 2m 5½ft trip should live up to the legacy. This is the first time he will face good ground and the main thing is to settle it, which he has not done recently. I’m sure there’s a win in it, it’s just predictability when it’s the hard part.

ᲕᲕᲕᲕᲣᲚᲝ Today is arguably more interesting as he returns from a 168-day break and while his overall return from absence record is good, with quite a lot of it in Jersey, he won here too quickly after too long. A similar breaking of fences happened back in 2022.

He never repeated his original chasing effort and I think he fell in love with the fences pretty quickly, so I’m happy to forgive his poor return last year. Go back over the hurdles and down low for yardage going well.

They both have the potential to win this and blow it up evenly, so rather than have one of them back down, I’d rather have them both just fight for the win for us.
